Michael Kelley’s essays on faith and the practice of law have become the backbone of a new podcast. Two long conversations are out; more are coming.
The Unsettled Question is the podcast of the Legal Ministry Network, a Substack publication that describes itself as a place for those who labor in the vineyards of the law. It is hosted by Anton Sorkin, an affiliate professor at Trinity Law School and the former host of the Christian Legal Society’s Cross & Gavel podcast. Its first season is built around Michael Kelley’s seven-essay Turris Fortis series, taking one essay per episode.
Episode 1.1 — Where Chaos Meets Holy Ground (August 12, 2026; about an hour and forty minutes). Anton and Michael take up the first essay: the tension between serving the faith and serving the code, how the culture of legal education shapes a lawyer’s sense of purpose, the “hired gun” mentality and what it does to character, and the idea — drawn from Joshua 5 and, by way of illustration, from Tolkien — that the noise of the profession can give way to something ordered and holy. Read the essay on Insights.
Episode 1.2 — The Weapons of Peace (August 26, 2026; about an hour and twenty-five minutes). The second conversation is about formation: how the liturgies of law school and the habits of practice instill values before anyone consciously chooses them, the small compromises that accumulate into character, the temptation to let the ends justify the means, and what it looks like to take up the weapons of peace — meekness first among them — and to call things by their proper names. Read the essay on Insights.
Both episodes are long, unhurried, and more candid than most professional podcasts. They are also a reminder that a firm’s attorneys have lives and convictions beyond their case lists, and that the profession is better for hearing about them.
